Ask anyone what DJ Milkshake is like on the decks and they’ll most probably tell you – electric! ZAlebs blogger DJ Roxxi caught up with the man of the moment to get the scoop on his new venture…
I’ve been fortunate enough to share the decks with Milkshake on a few occasions and I can attest to this. From youth festivals to corporate shindigs, Milkshake knows how to shake things up! It’s most probably why his 5FM show is so aptly entitled – The Shake Down!
The radio and club DJ, originally from Soweto, has now evolved his brand to include producer, with the release of his new single, Living On The Edge.
Since it’s release, the track has been doing phenomenally well on both the radio and club circuit. Here’s what he had to say…
With most DJ’s now expanding their brand to include performance and producing, do you think that this places pressure on DJ’s entering the scene to follow the same route?
Not at all I think DJ’s have always been doing it. It’s a choice so we don’t have to be producers we all decide how we want to expand.
How long did it take you to work on this single?
It took me four months I think, I couldn’t stop changing it! I got to a point where I ran out of time and I had to release…If not I would still be working on it (laughs).
You rock the clubs, have an amazing show and now released a single. Anything else we can expect from you this year?
Yes my video is out so go check it out on YouTube! I’m definitely looking to release a project, like a compilation or album.
Who do you look up to locally in the industry?
I look up to all my peers and up and coming DJ’s, producers and artist because I feel that I am still learning and draw inspiration from all of them.
Will you be headed off to the Winter Music Conference (WMC) in Miami this year?
Not this year unfortunately, I have other plans. Watch this space…
With the single doing so well people want to know if they can expect an album?
Yes they can look forward to that or a compilation. I’m still strategising.
What advice would you give up-and-coming DJ’s in the industry?
Keep it simple, work hard and stay humble.
Take a listen to “Living on the edge” feat AKA and George Avakian and turn it up loud!
