One to Watch: Xolani Sithole

Please tell us a little more about who Xolani Sithole is?

Xolani Sithole is a guy from KZN originally from Emakhuzeni Exobho, but home is now at Mlazi 'P' session. Xolani is a very proud Sithole.

When did your career start?

It started in 1999 when I studied music at Natal Tech, where I was studying a diploma in music. in 2005 I received a call from Joyous Celebration which would mean that I had to move to Johannesburg. The great thing about this was that a lot of my friends were already in JHB so I didn't have any trouble relocating. After being with Joyous for close to 5 years, I branched out to record my own solo album and called it Limitless

What kinds of challenges did you face as an up and coming musician?

The biggest challenge is trying to find someone who will give you a recording deal, because record companies aren't just giving these away. It depends on who you are working with during that period that you are up and coming. A lot of major companies make it very difficult for undiscovered artists to get deals so you end up using your own money to make a record. After that the next challenge is marketing and distribution. Getting your stuff on the radio

Would you ever go back to Joyous Celebration?

No they can feature me but I can’t go back and join Joyas unless they really request me to come back.

How did you find working with Zakes Bantwini?

Zakes is more like a younger brother to me, because we grew up together and went to the same school and we have been friends for a very long time. When he became popular he called and asked me to help him out with the last track on his album. We went over to Black Coffee's studio and in about 2 weeks time people were telling that I'm on the radio! I'm honored to have a person like him in my life.

At the moment what is your favourite gospel song ?

It has to be James Fortune and the name of the song is “I need your glory”

How did it feel to share a stage with talents such as Sibongile Khumalo?

The Sibongile hook up was in my early days. It was quite frightening, but it was also a really good feeling. I love that they respect up and coming musicians, and Sibongile was no different. Having said that, the salary you get when working with them is rather nice too!

Who did you work with to produce Limitless?

I worked with my team namely; Mduduzi, Devin, Thulani and Leroy.

What would you say was your most embarrassing moment as a musician?

I was performing with Joyous and as I was singing, people were giggling, and as I stopped singing Instead of people applauding me but they giggled and that’s when I realised that my zip was been broken and back stage the entire Joyous crew laughed at me! It was the Joke of the Year!

Everybody at ZAlebs would like to thank Xolani for taking the time to speak to us, we hope to hear more of his work soon!
