New evidence has emerged in what is being billed as the criminal trial of the decade, showing that Oscar Pistorius was browsing porn sites just hours before he shot and killed his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Police allegedly retrieved the data, which also included surfing used-car sites, on one of his cellphones, which was found at the crime scene, and the timing matched when he and Steenkamp were together, Sunday Times reports.
In court papers, The National Prosecuting Authority said that “the accused’s website activities from the time that he got home is in direct contrast to that of a loving couple spending time together”.
A source added: “The history recovered from this phone shows he visited those sites during the time they were at home together. Why was he checking out such sites while she was there?”
Pistorius has maintained his innocence amidst a media frenzy, and claimed that he feared an intruder that night and thought the couple’s lives were in danger.
The trial has captured media attention the world over with many major international news organisations having dedicated reporters working on it.
Lulama Luti, spokesman for the office of the chief justice, said the final media allowed in the courtroom would include both local and international organisations
“These include both local and international journalists. Obviously, we are looking into striking a balance between accrediting small and large news organisations, while also ensuring that there is equal representation of both national and international media,” Luti said.
Pistorius is set to go on trial for the murder of Steenkamp in a little over a week.
