Before we get down to the nitty gritties of this review, I should kick this off with a disclaimer. I’d like to declare that I am a proudly South African music fanatic. I’m also proud of the strides our music industry has made in coming up with innovative ways of telling authentic stories about ourselves. With that said.
Now that we’ve covered that, let me tell you all about how this new Rae Sremmurd music video they shot in SA is the worst thing I’ve seen all week.
I saw in a Pitchfork article that they’d ‘toured South Africa’ to visit local night clubs, pet cheetahs, and ‘stunt in the savannah.’
I watched the video and quickly realized how it was all a condescending attempt to document their journey through the rich African Wilderness.
It had scenes from maybe the Joburg Zoo; the Mandela Square showed up (like, really?); I also saw the Mandela Bridge (I’m snoring now); some bong smoke and yellow bones kissing. So basically anyone with a friend that can stick a camera out of the window while they drive from Sandton to Great Dane in Braam could’ve shot this.
But this is just me talking. Watch for yourself and let me know what you think?
