Rocking DJ on a leading station on the weekend, news presenter, MC, full time mum, business woman and hanging with Taylor Swift. All in a days work for DJ Sureshnie Rider.
They say musicians and actors lead the rock star life but I beg to differ. Just hanging out with 5FM award-winning DJ (we’ll talk about this later!) Sureshnie for a few hours and listening to her chat about her career makes me want to pinch myself. Am I really here in studio, during the Top 40, chatting with one of the leading female DJs in South Africa? Ouch! You bet!
Growing up I’ve always been a fan of Top 40 shows especially the ones on 5FM. With all the hits jam-packed into a few hours – the energy was almost tangible over the air. I definitely think that’s one of the reasons I decided to become a DJ – play the music the people want!
Fast forward a few (or more) years and I’m granted an opportunity to hang out an actual live broadcast of a 5FM Top 40 show with one of my role models – Sureshnie Rider!
Arriving at the studio Sureshnie is in full on party mode with the tunes cranked up loud and dancing in her chair alone.
I can definitely tell you that her bubbly personality and awesome vibe makes the show the hit that it is! No arguing why her show scooped the MTN Weekend Show award this year!
For the past 16 years in radio Sureshnie has used her platform wisely, building up not only a solid fan base but strengthening her skills. From presenting the news to holding down a solo show, Sureshnie has the talent and skill to connect with an audience.
Since taking over the reigns on the Top 40, Sureshnie has met many stars and chatted to some influential musicians but nothing could prepare her for meeting Taylor Swift in Texas last year!
Taking off her Blieber hat, Sureshnie raved about how much of respect she has for Taylor Swift as both a musician and businesswoman.
Speaking of business, Sureshnie co-owns Bobble Head SA with her husband Leigh that manufactures bobble heads of our politicians, musicians and actors.
Besides holding down radio show, MC gigs and running a business Sureshnie is also mum to two-and-half year old Pavani Milan. A little budding DJ in the making Pavani is also a music fanatic. There’s no telling she takes after her mum!
As predicted when girls get together we chatted non-stop on anything and everything. Check out my quick fire questions to Sureshnie below:
Favourite colour:

Favourite song:
Mariah Carey ft Miguel – Beautiful. Trust that this will be a new favourite wedding track!
Favoutrite Saturday lunch:
Chicken Licken but not spicy!
Twitter or Facebook:
Twitter! I like 140 words or I’ll go on for days!
Favourite car :
Monster Car or a Chevy Lumina customised with a Jacuzzi, gold spinners and DJ decks so I can play on-the-go.
Favourite quote:
Carpe diem – Seize the Day. It’s a mantra I learned from my high school teacher Pat.
With so much going on I’m keen to know what’s next for Mrs Rider.
Sureshnie mentions that she will be rolling out a new campaign through Legacy Lifestyle called Blow the Whistle. Essentially it will focus on combating crime against women. Along with that she will continue her radio, MC and DJ work as well as being an awesome wife and mum – no pressure!
After experiencing a slice of Sureshnie’s life for a few hours I have newfound respect for her. Juggling an actual show, my interview and chatting with her fans on Twitter is no easy feat at all!
Before I know it we are counting down to number one and KB walks in ready to take over. I glance at my watch and it’s just gone 2pm – guess there’s still time to grab that Chicken Licken with Sureshnie! With Justin Bieber blaring the studio we head out and I need to pinch myself.
Yip, that JUST happened. We just wrapped up the 5FM Top 40.
