ChianoSky is leading the pack at this year’s South African music awards with a whopping five nominations! We caught up with the stylish starlet to chat about the upcoming awards ceremony.
So, ChianoSky, your very first album has been nominated for five SAMAs! How did you feel when you heard the news?
I know! To be honest I was not even thinking five at all! So when they kept saying ‘ChianoSky, ChianoSky’, I was freaking out! It just so nice to know that people have seen all the hard work that I’ve put into the album, and that they’ve recognised it.
And you’re only 19 years old! Are you nervous about the awards?
I’m definitely feeling a bit nervous, because you don’t know what to expect! But I’m definitely excited. I’ve never been to the SAMAs before, so I’m excited to get all dressed up and to be a part of this year’s event.
You’re up for a lot of big awards – including female artist of the year! Do you have any expectations?
I’m just happy to be nominated! It’s crazy. But hopefully I’ll be surprised that I win! I’m really hoping that I take home best female, but I really am just happy to even be there.
Walking Away is up for record of the year – tell us a bit more about it.
I wrote it at quite a vulnerable time when I was just coming out of this crazy relationship. So I had a lot of fuel to write off of and I really resonated with the song. It was great when I got feedback from other girls that the song helped them deal problems in their lives. It’s nice to know that I have that connection, and that’s what I wanted the song to do.
What will you be wearing on the night?
I’ll be wearing a surprise garment by a great South African designer. I can’t say who though! We decided to keep it a secret, but it’s really beautiful. It’s a bit cheeky, and a little naughty – I think it sums up my personality. When I put it on I just knew it was the dress!
You’ve actually become quite a style icon! So is your style cheeky and naughty?
I do like to be cheeky. I think the best word is spontaneous. One day I’m the sunflower child and the next I’ve been listening to the Rolling Stones and I feel like a little rocker girl. I definitely do like to feel sexy, because it makes me feel confident. I believe if you’ve got the moves and the bum – you’ve got to wear things that make it look good!
Who will you be going to the awards with?
I’ll be going with my boyfriend, Ross Jack.
And do you guys have any special celebrations planned?
I have to go and perform at Justin Bieber the very next day, so I’ll have to be up early that morning. But we’ll definitely celebrate properly after the tour when all the nerves are gone – get together with family, have a night out with friends and just let loose a little bit.
