Later this month Native Rhythms artists and multi-award winning songstress Siphokazi will host her very own Siphokazi Charity Concert which aims to raise awareness for the mentally disturbed children of the Soweto community. ZAlebs chattted with Siphokazi to find out more…
Could you tell us more about the Siphokazi Charity Concert and how it all came about?
It’s basically about the disadvantaged children and school that I’ll be giving back to through this concert. I’ll be featuring numerous gospel artists; a duo called Bongi and Colin, Tumelo Matlala as well as two comedians. I also think that their reason for supporting this initiative is because they themselves believe that by performing in this concert, they’ll be adding value into someone’s life.
Did you have a specific vision when coming up with the idea for the concert?
I have such a soft spot for children; my love for them is just so great! Also, just knowing that the children in that school are mentally disturbed really breaks my heart. Especially knowing that later on in life society will not regard them as people who can add value. So I want to do this concert annually to ensure that the value that I’m adding in the lives of these children is consistent. At the end of the day we all know that God has a purpose for these children’s lives and we cannot afford to just push them on the side-lines while we live on with our lives.
What is the name of the school and where will the concert take place?
The name of the school is called Usizo lethu which means Our Help. It’s quite ironic because that is exactly what I’m trying to do. The concert will take place in Daveyton on the 28th of April 2013.
