The South African Idols fan favourite had a meteoric rise to fame back in 2015 thanks to her huge voice and her single Because of You which capitalised on the success of her journey on the singing TV show.
Speaking exclusively to ZAlebs, Mmatema talks to us about
everything you have always wanted to know.
When asked about her debut album she explains that, “People
have been waiting for a year and a half for my debut album and it is finally
ready.”
She goes on to say, “We are going big for my live CD launch
on the 3rd of March, it is going to be in an intimate venue, we are
going to have 400 fans who are going to express this momentous event with me,
it will be the first time some of them experience anything of this
magnitude and I am happy to be the person that will give them this
experience.”
This Live CD launch is the definition of me, it is for the
people and I am going to give the people what they want. The songs are very
inspirational, I have a wide range of supporters and there is something for
everyone.
I have a song titled Lerato on my album, it talks about love, and people can personalize it anyhow they want to, it could be the love you have for God, between a couple, friends or even a parent and a child relationship.
I am a Born Again Christian, I am not going to run away from my faith, my music is a representation of who I am and what I believe in, I will never sing about bikinis and popping bottles, I am not that girl.
She spoke of having a song called Nqobile with DJ Tira, although she sings on a house beat, the song doesn’t stray away from what she sings about, it is still very much inspirational and she promises that her fans will love it.
Mmatema also collaborated with DJ Cleo, if you can recall back to her Idols days, you will remember that the DJ wanted to sign Mmatema back while she was in the competition, that didn’t happen but the pair worked on a new song for her debut album, Choose to be happy. Read here
Not only is she super talented and gorgeous, Mmatema is a boss in every sense, she wrote
90% of the songs on her album, the songstress attributes this to wanting to do
her own thing and trusting in God.
Speaking on being independent, she says, “It is great, it has always been what I want, I am in charge of my career, I
had to learn, I opened my company, Mmatema Moremi Media Productions and it
feels really good to see your baby grow, and I can’t wait to do more.”
Mmatema also has a role on a new SABC 2 show, Bone of My Bones, she confesses that this is her first big acting gig, “I went to auditions before I got this part, and it was not just given to me because I am Mmatema.”
She goes on to speak about how she will handle negativity, ” I have already prepared myself emotionally for the backlash I might receive . “I am an artist, I
have skills and I want to show them off, I am not going to limit myself, I want
to do everything I can do and do it well.”
Mmatema also has a degree in Linguistics, but she doesn’t see herself going back to corporate, “I have fallen in love with the entertainment space, this is what I have been called to do.”
When asked if she has a special man in her life, the gorgeous girl said, “No, but I do have a lot of guy friends, being in the entertainment industry is hard because you never know who wants you and who wants to use you, so I am weighing my options for now.”
