According to organizers of the show, the show is heading to the Mother City in December this year.
The music festival was founded by the late rapper and businessman Riky Rick. In a statement released via social media organizers announced that the first-ever Cotton Fest Cape Town will take place at the Gaarden Eiland Park on 10 December.
"The University of Cottonfest is going on tour and is set to take place on 10 December 2022 at Paarden Eiland Park, Transvaal Street, Paarden Eiland. Our University Campus experience includes 2 stages featuring some of South Africa’s best artists, Merch, sports area and more."
In a conversation with TshisaLIVE, the festival's co-founder Alain Ferrier said that he is happy that the festival is growing and that his legacy is continuing.
“With what started out as a great idea between Riky and I many years ago to a whole culture movement called Cotton Fest. Alongside his family, we are extremely excited to be building on his legacy and extending the festival to my city, which was always part of our plans.” said co-founder Alain Ferrier.”
Cotton Fest took place in April and it featured a star-studded lineup including AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Big Zulu and Boity, Sjava. Cassper's performance left a lot of people singing his praises.
After a long feud with Riky Rick, Cassper made his first appearance at Cotton Fest this year. During his memorial, he revealed he was going to be the surprise act. Cassper once spoke about the time they met at his service.
“Riky and I met on Facebook. The same way Riky Rick reached out to all the kids. At one point I was also just another kid from Maftown and it wasn't really easy to move in Johannesburg, but he still had the time for me and he did that for hundreds of people after me.
“I then ended up forming a relationship with him, a friendship where we would not only talk about music but we would talk about life. One of the things that I loved about Riky was how honest he was. Riky would tell you the truth,” he said. “I loved hearing Riky sing. I loved hearing him sing, more than him rapping. I always encouraged him to sing.”
After that, he expressed regret for not expressing his love to him while he was still alive.
“Me and him were not on the greatest of terms, even though we were speaking. One of the things I regret was that I wasn't able to tell him how much I loved that video and how much I loved hearing him sing again.”
“Riky was one of my idols. Riky was everything I wanted to be. One of the things I never told him — I don't know if it's because of toxic masculinity or what — was the fact that I really said he was such a beautiful man ... Riky was so handsome that, even as a guy, you'd have that said that 'Hayi man! The broer is too much!' Not only was his appearance beautiful but he was a beautiful soul.”
“It's so crazy that now, everyone is cheering Riky on for the things that he did, but while he was alive he didn't get that love.”
