The actress will portray the role of Shaka Zulu’s aunt Mkabayi kaJama in the drama series, who is known to be one of the most strongest women in that era. The news was confirmed by producer Bongumusa Zungu who told Daily Sun that they needed a woman of Dawn's strength to join the series.

According to the producer, Mkabayi is the one responsible for helping Shaka Zulu sit on the throne, but is also the one who plotted his death.

Reacting to the news, Dawn told the publication that this is a big role for her. “She helped kings sit on the throne and she wanted to be hands-on. So, playing this role is big for me as an artist.”

The series features a star-studded cast including Nomzamo Mbatha, who plays Queen Nandi, the revered mother of Shaka, and she also produces the show. Other members include Thembinkosi Mthembu starring as King Dingiswayo, and Wiseman Mncube in the role of King Zwide. Playing the young and old Shaka are Lemogang Tsipa (adult king) and new kid on the block Ntando Zondi (boy king).

Speaking about the series, Nomzamo Mbatha said, “I am honoured to bring the giant that is Queen Nandi to life. History will remember those who informed its people of where we come from, to better understand who we are. I am fortunate to be part of a project that is much bigger than ourselves and to tell this story in our own language. Impi iyeza!”

Ntando Duma was announced as the late addition to the series and she will play Queen Bhibhi KaSompisi Ntuli, who is the ninth wife of King Senzangakhona, Shaka's father.

The series will be released in 2023 with the initial date to be announced at a later stage.

“Being able to bring this important story to the screen with such stellar talent speaks to the heart of MultiChoice’s ongoing commitment and investment in our local entertainment industry. We are committed to telling great African stories and this is a proudly African series told through the lens of Africans for the very first time,” commented Yolisa Phahle, CEO of General Entertainment & Connected Video at MultiChoice.

This comes after DiepCity got canceled after two successful seasons. Black Brain produces the show and they said, "DiepCity has always been envisaged to be two years production in partnership with Mzansi Magic and now the contract is nearing its end. A deliberate and strategic move by Mzansi Magic, to offer viewers a dynamic show that would keep them glued to their screens and secure that slot."

Mandla N also had this to say, "DiepCity has been hit on South African television and has introduced audiences to unique characters who have resonated strongly with fans. DiepCity fans have played a big role in the success of the show over the past two years and we are thankful for their support."
