SABC1 To Broadcast The Memorial Service Of AKA

The slain rapper's memorial service will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre, north of Johannesburg this afternoon

SABC1 has announced that it will carry out a live broadcast of the Memorial Service of the late Mr. Kiernan Forbes today from 3 pm to 6 pm.

The public broadcaster said programmes that were meant to air during these slots, would be affected today. AKA and his friend/manager Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane, were shot dead on Friday night by two unknown gunmen as they were leaving Wish restaurant, on Florida Road, Durban.

The channel released a statement earlier this week mourning the death of the rapper who hosted The Braai Show on SABC1.

"SABC1 is saddened by the untimely passing of Award Winning musician Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, known professionally as AKA, who passed away on Friday. Mr. Forbes hosted the first season of The Braai Show, a cooking-talk-lifestyle show on SABC1, giving viewers a fun, insightful glance into the lives of South Africa's most intriguing famous personalities.
 
Some of the hit songs that he is popularly known for are Victory Lap, Fela in Versace, Lemons, All Eyes on Me and Jika. SABC1 sends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues," said SABC1 in a statement. 

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, has revealed that the late rapper will not be honoured with a state-funded funeral. Lesufi told Newzroom Afrika that attempts to get the president to declare a Provincial Official Funeral for the slain rapper were not successful.
Lesufi continued to mention that even though his office did not succeed in sending the deceased with a state-funded funeral. His office will, however, continue to provide security support on the day of the funeral. As a mark of respect and honor, Kiernan 'AKA' Forbes' coffin will also be draped with a South African flag and flown at half-mast.

"He will be buried in a secluded venue with leaders and heroes and heroines of our society but we will also provide security support and also ensure that the feel our support. We felt that for a person of his international statue, there must be some sort of honor. And we want to clarify, it is not a financial contribution but it is an honor of draping the coffin and making sure the flag is flied at half mast and making sure that his funeral becomes a befitting funeral" said Panyaza Lesufi

The memorial service will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Both AKA and Tibz will be buried on Saturday.
