The National Prosecuting Authority Confirms Thuli Phongolo's Assault Case Withdrawal

Meanwhile scores of people who supported her have since raised concerns and disappointment at her decision

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed Thuli Phongolo's assault charge against boyfriend DJ Maphorisa being withdrawn. Yesterday, the Randburg Magistrates Court heard Phongolo's withdrawal statement and subsequently released the accused, DJ Maphorisa on an amount of R4000.00 bail.

Following the social media outraged once the news was made public that DJ Maphorisa abused and assaulted girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo. Scores of social media users were up in arms as they rallied behind Phongolo to pledge support and allegiance. However, after DJ Maphorisa's short appearance before the Randburg Magistrates Court yesterday for bail hearing. Things took an unexpected turn and left a handful of people rather disappointed at Phongolo's decision to withdraw.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed in writing that the assault charges have been withdrawn. Even though the court informed the accused (DJ Maphorisa) that the charges will be officially withdrawn once a formal statement by the compliant (Thuli Phongolo) is made available to the court.

According to the NPA, Phongolo was before court yesterday during DJ Maphorisa's appearance. The Randburg Magistrates Court received Phongolo's formal withdrawal statement and she agreed for the accused (DJ Maphorisa) to be released on bail.

"It is alleged that on Sunday, 07 May 2023, the accused assaulted his girlfriend, Thulisie Phongolo by hitting her open hands and strangled her after she confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform. The compliant laid a charge with Sandton South African Police Service (SAPS) and acted prompt and arrested the accused. Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement and was before court to which she agreed for the accused to be released on bail. The court set bail at an amount of R4000" wrote Phindi Mjondwane, NPA Spokesperson, Gautent Local Division

DJ Maphorisa will again appear before the Randurg Magistrates Court  as the case was remanded for the 14 of June, 2023. This of course to allow him to lodge representations amidst Thuli Phongolo's withdrawal statement.

The case was remanded to 14 June 2023 for Sekowe to lodge representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), in light of the withdrawal statement that has been filed by the complainant" ended Phindi Mjondwane, NPA Spokesperson, Gautent Local Division
