World Adoption Day - 9 November - is all about celebrating families and raising awareness about adoption.
Families around the world are celebrating the day, with ambassadors organising parties and events, according to the World Adoption Day website.
Here are some South African celebs who are part of the adoption family...
Actress Bonnie Mbuli is an adoptive parent and has two sons, Micaiah and Hanniel. She adopted Hanniel when he was just three months. Bonnie says she has always known that she wanted to adopt and even volunteered at a home for abandoned children. “Adoption is such a big decision. Chances are it’s something that you have thought of for a while, before you finally do it,” she told Parent 24 in 2014. “Ever since I was a little girl I knew I would adopt. It was just something that was in my heart."
TV personality and rapper, Sipho “Psyfo” Ngwenya, was adopted when he was 11. His adoptive mother, singer June "Diva" Kraus, took him in after his mother, who was a domestic worker, died. Psyfo credits June with helping him follow his dreams and pushing him to work hard.
Idols SA contestant Shekhinah Donnell was adopted when she was just a baby, after she was abandoned. Her father Phil Donell was by her side throughout her time on the show in 2012. Shekhinah’s song Back to the Beach, is currently blowing up South Africa’s radio airwaves.
Actress Charlize Theron is one of South Africa’s biggest exports. She has two adopted children, son Jackson and daughter August. Charlize told Vogue magazine in 2012 she always knew she wanted a family. “I hope to be like my mom. Fair, tough, loving and supportive. My mom has made it possible for me to be who I am. Our family is everything. Her greatest skill was encouraging me to find my own person and own independence.”
