Ukraine launched a large overnight drone operation against Russian energy, digital and transport assets, concentrating on Saint Petersburg and the surrounding Leningrad region as Kyiv stepped up retaliation for continuing Russian strikes on its own power and fuel infrastructure.
Energy, data and logistics facilities hit near Saint Petersburg
The assault struck several strategically important sites, including the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, the Baltic region’s main fuel-export gateway.
- Leningrad Oblast Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said roughly 150 drones were intercepted, confirming that Ukraine had deployed hundreds of unmanned aircraft in the operation.
- The Ruchi oil depot, which stores petrol and diesel fuel, was among the facilities hit.
- The VK data centre, a major server site for Russia’s largest social-network operator, was also struck.
- Damage was reported at the nearby Vostochnaya substation, a 330-kilovolt electricity installation. The outage left thousands of residents without power.
Transport and e-commerce infrastructure affected
A fire erupted after drones came down at an Ozon warehouse in Kolpino, affecting a logistics facility used by the e-commerce group.
The Korabelny Fairway was also affected. The expressway bridge is a 620-metre, three-span cable-stayed structure.
Zelensky cites continuing attacks on Ukrainian energy system
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Russia had carried out 76 attacks on Ukraine’s energy, oil and gas infrastructure since US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire one week earlier.
In a post on X, Zelensky pointed to Saturday’s strikes on substations in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi and Odesa regions. Tens of thousands of households remained without electricity after those attacks.
- An agricultural business in Volyn was hit on Sunday.
- Fresh attacks on residential properties in several regions killed two people and wounded 12 others.
- Over the past week, Russia used 2,700 drones, 1,700 aerial bombs and 66 missiles against Ukraine, Zelensky said.
“The main targets of these strikes are energy facilities … to cause a blackout,” Zelensky wrote.
Sanctions relief dispute
Zelensky told the United States that Moscow was not taking reciprocal measures in exchange for sanctions relief. Instead, he said, Russia was seeking revenue as “proof that their bet on war is paying off and they can keep fighting.”
