Ukhozi FM's Song of the Year drama left a lot of fans seriously unhappy. Where did it all go wrong?

Over the years, Ukhozi FM has enjoyed a solid relationship with its loyal listeners.

Therefore, when it was announced at the end of December 2019 that the highly anticipated annual Song of the Year would not be aired, scores of listeners were left bitterly disappointed.

What happened to Song of The Year?

The 2019 Song of the Year chart show didn't end up playing on Ukhozi FM due to the ongoing drama between the station and MO Production. Ukhozi FM had terminated the services of MO Production, but still continued using their concept without compensating them. This company, in particular, was responsible for running the New Year's Eve Song of the Year chart for the station.

MO Productions obtained an interdict against Ukhozi FM - which prevented the airing of the song of the year on the station.

According to Sunday World,  an extract from MO Production's affidavit reads as follows:

''In 2018 the event resumed pursuant to an addendum to regulate It for that specific year. The addendum was preceded by a letter of intent from the respondent (SABC). However, the respondent allowed some of its radio stations to conduct parallel campaigns in the flagrant breach of the agreement and the addendum between the parties. The parallel campaign led to about 18 000 (eighteen thousand) votes not being audited giving rise to a consternation within the entertainment industry as well as discontent by the sponsors.''

''The exclusive licence which was granted by the applicant to the respondent expired with the expiration of the contract on the 31 March 2019
It follows that the respondent conduct has appropriated the Applicant’s rights to itself unlawfully.''
