"Talks of Teargas splitting are not true" - K.O

K.O is one of Cashtime and Teargas's finest examples of overcoming adversity as an artist. Despite rumours around Teargas eventually splitting making rounds last week, KO remains focussed on his main priority- to release his highly anticipated solo album.

This hitmaker is set to drop his 11 track debut solo album entitled Skhanda Republic on October 20.

“I am surprised I pulled off an album all by myself, as an individual I have found some comfort in working on my own,” he says.

2014 has turned out to be a year  to remember for KO. The star took the chance to sparkle and show off his ability as an individual and has proven himself to be just as good as the likes of AKA, Cassper Nyovest and Duncan. In fact, KO was rated as Africa's second best rapper by MTV Base last week.

His hit single, Caracara has been nominated five times at the upcoming Channel O African Music Video Awards.

On his nomination he said that it’s a pleasure to be recognized but emphasised that it can be a distress too.

“I am honoured for the recognition its humbling but I will not disregard that there have been some disappointments before so whatever happens, happens it does not determine my success.”

On the song currently putting him on the A list of happening rappers he explains his inspiration came from Caravans which were a fashionable form of transport back in his school days.

“I grew up in the 90s when the Cara cars were the in thing; we used them for school and for parties.

“I figured in 2014, I should throw back my sound to the days when kwaito was rocking,” K.O says.

His efforts this year, infused with a new sound which he terms "skhanda" music, has made a massive impact on Mzansi hip hop's continued growth.

“I wanted to attempt killing the foreign sound and keeping it local. Us hip hop artists, we are failing to craft the international rap, its best we do what we South Africans are good at,” he says.

He also went on to confirm that talks of Teargas splitting are false.

“We have decided to individually try new things just like Mafikizolo did. We are taking a break but it does not mean we are a dead group.”

The industry is full of rumours, it wasn't too long ago that people were speculating around the rapper's health. He expresses his disappointment at the rumours,

“I have seen articles about me being sick, and I remember when I started my diet my mom supported me and told me people will call me names but I must be strong because I know the truth.

“Being called HIV positive did hurt but it was more painful to my girlfriend who was being attacked on social media just because of fabricated news.”
