Superstar South Africa DJ, music producer, and entrepreneur Nkosinathi ‘Black Coffee’ Maphumulo is no stranger to international gig guides, A-list celebrity circles, and Hollywood at large. He’s always private jetting in and out of each state with his on-demand gig guide taking him from Miami, Cabo, and Soweto to Mexico and back to Johannesburg.
Black Coffee does play as hard as he works though, yesterday the superstar music producer started off his April at the Sean Combs’ estate in Los Angeles where fans and followers saw him lay back and enjoy a relaxed Friday afternoon with music executive and businessman Sean Combs, affectionately known as P Diddy, or to many others, as Love.
Although this is not the first time we see this pair together, their friendship, or as Black Coffee would describe it, brotherhood, leaves a lot of South Africans impressed and proud of Black Coffee’s success and penetration in the American mainstream and digital media.
These two in fact met years ago back in 2014 when Black Coffee tweeted a picture with Diddy saying that he’d long wanted to meet the fellow musician. But even then, they only started hanging out on a personal level in 2017 in Malibu where we also saw DJ Black Coffee perform at Diddy’s house party that same year.
In a shared tweet by local entertainment commentator Musa Khawula, with a picture where Black Coffee is seen posing with P Diddy, his South African fans started showing some love, calling him one of the few “real” celebrities we have in the country with some expected comparisons with the Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, Bonang Matheba and AKA.
Even with all the love, there will naturally be some bubble bursters who react negatively to any and everything on Twitter. Some users of course criticized this image of the two superstars saying that South Africans have a tendency of equating success according to American standards and approval.
Another social media user teased, telling Black Coffee to be careful around Diddy claiming that he is not to be trusted around male friends as he referenced an old video where Diddy is seen spanking fellow businessman and friend Sean Carter popularly known as Jay Z.
But the international DJ has stopped entertaining social media trolls and criticism since his previous relationship with ex-wife Mbali Mlotshwa made tabloid headlines a few years ago. He used to engage and reply to some tweets showing hate but lately, he does not seem to be fazed, instead, he is living his best life.
It is no surprise to see Black Coffee rub shoulders with big names in international media as he undoubtedly forms part of the A-list celebrity circles. Some of the celebrities that have a close relationship with Black Coffee include Champagne Papi himself, Drake, Alicia Keys and husband Swiss Beats, the late Virgil Abloh, Pharell, and Wizkid to mention a few.
Black Coffee is currently on a continuous touring gig in America and all over the world with almost all his gigs filling up with music lovers from across the globe making him the most booked and busiest artist and DJ from South Africa.
