Personal Life

Dr Tumi whose real name is Tumisang Makweya was born on 10 July 1981 in Seshego, Limpopo province. Dr Tumi’s parents are David Makweya and Lilly Makweya. His father was a priest while his mother was a teacher. His father’s influence saw Dr Tumi pick up music at the age of nine which is when he was introduced to his first musical instrument, a piano. He also sang in church, a platform that helped him horn his skills.

Schooling

Despite his passion for music, Dr Tumi's father wanted him to study medicine. Tumi obliged and graduated from the Medical University of South Africa (Medusa) in 2006 after six years.

Career

During his final year in university, Dr Tumi joined a musical group called Intense. However, he stopped his pursuit of music because of his medical work. He says he felt empty during those years but an album by Rose Donald Lawrence triggered him to go back into writing music.

This is the period he wrote the songs for his first album ‘Heart of a King’. Some of the songs in the album include ‘Royalty’, ‘My Rest’, ‘You are Here’, ‘Son of God’. This album won him the Best RnB Gospel Award at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards.

In between that, he worked in public health and opted for private practice. He did that for a couple of years and opened about three clinics. Whilst it was doing well, Dr Tumi says that the responsibilities overwhelmed him. His sense of emptiness, as he dropped music again, became more pronounced. This prompted him to go back to writing. This time, he wrote his second album ‘Love and Grace’ and went full-time on his musical career.

Dr Tumi has never looked back and has produced some of the most popular Gospel songs. Some of Dr Tumi’s songs include ‘Because of Jesus’, ‘Someone Like Me’, ‘Wafika’, ‘Overflow’, ‘All of Me’ amongst others.

In the course of his career, he has shared the stage with the likes of Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Letti Mbuli, Thembi Seete and Blondie Makhene.
