Siphiwe Tshabalala needs no introduction. Many thought that he would be a one club man and hang his football boots at Kaizer Chief, where his football story began. That was not the case as he has gone on to play for a Turkish Club and AmaZulu. One thing he will certainly be remembered for is his opening goal at the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Siphiwe Tshabalala is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. He is currently a free agent after he was released by Professional Soccer League (PSL) club AmaZulu FC in August 2021. He joined Benni McCarthy's side after his one year stint with Turkish club Büyükşehir Belediye Erzurumspor from 2018 to 2019.

He is one of South Africa's most well-known and accomplished players of his time. He is the first player to make his international debut while still playing in the National First Division. Tshabalala has 90 caps for South Africa. He has participated in three African Cup of Nations editions as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup, hosted in South Africa, where he scored the first goal on June 11, 2010. His goal was nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award. He is primarily a winger but has also played several roles in the midfield.

Career

With Kaizer Chiefs: Tshabalala began his career in the Kaizer Chiefs youth but only made it to the senior squad after stints with Alexandra United and Free State Stars. After Ea Lla Koto was demoted to the National First Division at the end of the 2005/06 season, Chiefs brought back their product in January 2007. However, Tshabalala was out for six months at the time following a severe knee injury.

2007–08 season: Tshabalala made his debut on 31 August, 2007, in a 1–0 loss against Bidvest Wits. In a 2–2 tie on 24 November, 2007, Tshabalala made his Soweto Derby debut. In the Telkom Knockout, Tshabalala appeared in his first cup final on 1 December, 2007, which he won after a penalty shootout against Mamelodi Sundowns. He played for the entire 120 minutes. On 12 December 2007, he scored his first goal for the Chiefs in a 4–2 triumph over Golden Arrows.

2008–09 season: Tshabalala produced magnificent goals, earning him the Player of the Year award at the Kaizer Chiefs Awards Ceremony. He was also named Website Player of the Year, Goal of the Season, and Readers' Choice. Eventually, Tshabalala walked away with R170,000 in prize money and a Nissan X-Trail along with the awards.

2015–16 season: Tshabalala hit the headlines on 25 August 2015, for a volleyed goal from way outside the box that was selected as one of the goals of the South African season. The goal occurred in a 4–0 triumph over Free State Stars F.C. at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium, the same location where Tshabalala scored a similar goal against Mexico in the world cup five years previously.

He appeared in 372 games, scoring 58 goals.

Tshabalala confirmed his departure from Kaizer Chiefs on 28 August, 2018, for Turkish club Büyükşehir Belediye Erzurumspor.

Tshabalala returned to South Africa in October 2020. He joined South African Premier Division club AmaZulu F.C. He agreed to a one-year deal with an option to extend another year. However, after one year, he was released by the club. in August 2021.

International career

While still playing in the National First Division, Tshabalala was one of the first players to be called up to the national squad. Tshabalala made his national team debut on 14 January, 2006, in a friendly against Egypt. After that, he was a member of South Africa's squads at the 2006, 2008 & 2013 African Nations Cup. He also featured in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. 

On 11 June 2010, while earning his 50th cap for South Africa, he scored the opening goal of the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Mexico in the 55th minute. The Soccer City (FNB Stadium) stadium erupted into frenzied celebrations. The game eventually ended in a 1-1 tie. That goal was later shortlisted for the FIFA Puskás Award in 2010 and a FIFA nomination for goal of the year.

Tshabalala was called up again to South Africa's World Cup qualification matches against Senegal in October 2017 for the first time since 2014.
