Seems that even through the grave, the late legendary rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes continues to make headlines. This comes off the back of the recent reports on the royalty claims made on two of AKA’s songs which sampled the music legend Ntate Caiphus Semenya.

“Semenya is allegedly demanding 50% of royalties from two ditties AKA sampled on his two blockbuster albums without obtaining a written consent from the 83-year-old musician.
The legendary Semenya has given AKA’s record company, Sony Music, an ultimatum to pay up or face the music.”
The confusion seems to stem from those that did not read the article and did not understand the context of Ntate Semenya’s claims. This is as the 83-year-old music legend had initially made an amicable resolution when AKA first sampled Ntate Semenya on his 2018 hit Caiphus Song without his permission.
However, at the time, AKA had apologised and agreed to make things right. However, he did not. Thereafter, on Mass Country, he sampled Ntate Semenya again on his introspective single Diary, again without the permission of Ntate Semenya hence his ultimatum.
As such, when it was suggested that Ntate Semenya was being an opportunist, the public was not having it.
The public defends Ntate Semenya’s royalty claims
In light of the ongoing debate on whether Caiphus Semenya is within his rights to demand 50% of any earnings made from songs which feature samples of his original music. Music executive, Rashid Kay seemed to land in hot water with his tweet suggesting that the legend was being opportunistic by tweeting that:
“After the passing of AKA, his streams and sales doubled and tripled. Ntate Caiphus Semenya saw the opportunity to cash in. He could have approached Mega when those songs were released. That’s a sneaky move from the elder.”
Safe to say, that tweeps did not take lightly the disrespect levelled against the internationally recognised music giant who has been credited by the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye West. As such, the comments section was filled with heated clap backs letting Rashid know that he needs to understand the context before insulting an elder and a global music legend!
