It's hard to believe that one of the most successful Afro-Soul groups in South Africa was once deamed as irrelevant and boring.
You would think that with all the success that The Soil has managed to gain since they stepped into the scene, one would think that their journey has been a smooth sailing one. But their first lady, Buhle Mda begs to differ.
Speaking to Essay Magazine Buhle opened up about how they used to receive a lot of ill-treatment from industry folk but they were still determined to heed to their musical calling.
"We were young and from the township. People said we didn't know what we wanted, but we really sweated to be recognized. We went to many festivals and gigs and sacrificed a lot of time and money because our vision was greater than our challenge. We were once tagged as boring, not relevant and old.
The words 'we made you' and 'we pay your salary' are the most piercing lines I always hear in the industry. But passion drives us to do what we do and, regardless of the fame we have, I am as human as everyone else and I have bad days too."
In the feature Buhle also mentioned how she wants to instill a sense of pride in her daughter's life.
" I want my child to grow up believing in herself and to be in charge of every room in her kingdom. I want her to stand up for herself and not allow people to walk over her. And, as a mother, the best way I can do that is to be a role model to her."
Besides music Buhle has also started a clothing line which she wants pension workers to work on so as to revive their skills like sewing.
"I want pensioners to work on my clothing line and continue working on the skills they are good at, such as sewing. I also want to help uplift young, disadvantaged but gifted girls in the art." Said the singer.
