While they are successful as DJs, it is their random and sometimes ignorant tweets that seem to land them in hot water. Like their most recent tweet which seems to place judgement on those that still live “ekasi” or the hood, even after they have “made it” in life.
Major League DJz shade the 'kasi'
Major League DJz have one of the most followed YouTube music channels in the country. With their Amapiano Balcony Mix, they have one the most successful channels with each weekly release taking less than a few days to hit over 100 000 views and then some.
You would think that with this kind of success, that they would either have a social media manager or just stay away from social media when they are not promoting their new work. But the twins said, “no, we will tweet what we want,” and this is not always for the good.
This came as one of the twins took to Twitter to highlight how they believe the “kasi” or township is apparently toxic. The tweet alleged that amongst the reasons the township is toxic is due to witchcraft, negativity, peer pressure and jealousy, which results in people unjustly hating on the one who is successful. Their advice is to move out at your earliest convenience.
While there we tweeps who seemed to agree. It did not take long for other tweeps to highlight the inconsistencies of their sentiment. Firstly, Amapiano is a genre that was first endorsed and supported by different townships before it was mainstream. A sound which has made them internationally recognised.
Secondly, there was the matter of the twins never having stayed in a township. Bandile and Banele Mbere were born in the US. The two only moved back to South Africa at the turn of a democratic South Africa. Therefore, it rings as falisty for privileged twins that have never lived in the hood to stand on a pedestal and dragging what they believe is the living experiences of most people in the townships.
Ironically, it did not take long for another contentious fact about their tweet to be highlighted, and this was that the tweet was a direct cut-and-paste tweet of somebody else's tweet from a few days earlier. However, decided on cutting and pasting did not even attempt to change anything as the tweet is a replica of the original. Seemingly, it is not only in “ekasi” where things like plagiarism and jealousy is prevalent if even Major League DJz that do not live there can still display similar actions.
