Patrick Shai is taking a stand against gender-based violence.

As a reformed perpetrator of gender-based violence, Patrick Shai is doing a lot of work to fight for victims of abuse. Through his Khuluma Ndoda organisation, the actor wants to change men's perspective towards women.

He told Afternoon Express in a recent interview: "It's appalling to read everyday that so many girls are raped, so many women are killed, so many young girls, even young little kids are raped... And you begin to ask yourself 'what kind of men are we in South Africa today?'"

He explained that he took his wife through a whole lot of things. "The whole programme ya Khuluma Ndoda is based on my own personal experience. For me it was an opportunity, it was a responsibility more so than any other thing, to take a responsible position in my life and say I am addressing issues that enable the violation of women," Patrick said on the show.

In an interview with Move! magazine two years ago, his wife Mmasechaba Shai shared how her husband abused her. "He would come back home in the middle of the night drunk and force me to wake up and talk. He would complain and raise issues that he was not happy about - issues that he did not address when he was sober," she told the publication.
