THE SAFTA NOMINATIONS BREAK THE INTERNET.
The SAFTAs are trending with over 4000 tweets. there is so much to unpack here, some of our favourites have been nominated and some deserving acts have been snubbed. While some problematic faves have managed to slip through the cracks.
The SAFTA nominations were released on the SAFTAs new home channel SABC3 Expresso. The nominations accused a frenzy on social media, to say the least. The SAFTAs has already caused some controversy by moving to SABC3 after 14 years of being broadcast on SABC 2.
The nominations were controversial, to say the least fans were upset after SAFTAs snubbed popular south African show Skeem Saam was snubbed. While Skeem Saam actors scored individual nominations, actors Shoki Mmola (Best Actress), Molefi Monaisa and Mothusi Magano (Best Supporting Actor) managed to score nominations. But tweeps were livid that Skeem Saam did not get nominated for best Tv soap or best telenovela.
The SAFTA nominations also took a moment to pay tribute to the late thespian Menzi Ngubane who passed away earlier this year, Menzi died on March 13 after suffering a stroke at home. He was 56 and is survived by his wife Sikelelwa and two daughters. The academy paid homage to Menzi by nominating him posthumously for best actor in the Telenovela category for his role as Judas Ngwenya on isibaya.
Another controversial figure who rocked the waves was former Expresso host Katlego Maboe. Katlego Maboe best known for his quirky Outsurance ads found himself being cancelled after he cheated on his partner and allegedly gave her an STI. The talk show host has been looking for a way to come back to the mainstream. Some people speculate that this SAFTA nomination, and potential win, is one way to make a comeback.
SAFTAs nomination did not seem to have considered the way tv had to change during lockdown. During hard lockdown, many south Africans tuned into DJ Shimza’s lockdown house party where he cured people’s cabin fever with some music that turned peoples homes into mini nightclubs Shimza took to Twitter to remind his followers of the SAFTA committee.
Actress and radio DJ Thando Thabethe was also among those who were snubbed from the prestigious television awards. While some of the shows featured in were nominated for a SAFTA Thabethe took a moment to go onto her Instagram and celebrate that the shows she’s involved with have collectively been nominated for 16 categories.
The actress did however express her disappointment in not being nominated for the category of best leading actress for her role in Housekeepers. We hope that Thabethe will get the recognition she deserves.
In anticipation of Rhythm City coming to end in July, the show is ending its journey on a high note by bagging several SAFTA nominations. actress Petronella Tshuma in the Best Actress- TV Soap category, Eric Mogale for Best Achievement In Directing- TV Soap, Zelipa Zulu for Best Achievement In Scriptwriting, and Mapula Mafole in the Best Supporting Actress- TV Soap category.
