Minutes after his performance at the IdolsSA finale, Samthing Soweto topped the trends list. The vocalist performed a medley of his hits, but his performance was not what fans and viewers expected.
The singer, who currently has one of the best-selling albums this year titled Isphithiphithi, is best-known for his soothing vocals, but his performance on Idols was 'bad' - according to viewers.
On stage he was also joined by hit-maker Shasha and her vocals and stage presence were mocked. The duo performed their hit Akulaleki with DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small.
The Amantombazane singer relayed his message on video and apologised to fans for his performance. In the heartfelt video, his facial expression and tone says it all - letting us know that he read some of the mean comments that surfaced all over twitter. Shocked and triggered by the comments, he tried to make fans understand the situation.
He also made reference to his 2017 performance where he performed his breakthrough hit Akanamali and likened that performance to the recent one, saying he also felt as though he failed to perform and was not happy with it. The Idols atmosphere and the large crowd overwhelmed the musician, but he promised fans to do better next time.
Here are some of the many reactions to his performance:
After releasing his video, fans came to his defense saying they know his abilities and the quality of his voice. Celebrities including DJ Fresh, Sizwe Dhlomo, Andile Ncube, Sjava and DJ Maphorisa showed support to the hitmaker and told him to not beat himself up about it.
Samthing Soweto promises to redeem himself and reminded fans he, too, bleeds.
