Idols SA has managed to breed stars but much to viewers concern, their careers never last. The only noticeable career which is still flourishing is that of Khaya Mthethwa who dabbles in other ventures apart from singing. Viewers breathed a huge sigh of relief but the judges reacted in a bittersweet manner however, are grateful for the platform.

Somizi Mhlongo was quoted by Zimoja saying he most enjoyed season 18 because it was his return season after being fired for his marital drama. He said he had loads of fun pointing out his looks and the talent on the show.

“To be quite honest, season 18 has been the best season I’ve ever done, talent-wise. I had fun. With me, the outfit changes, hairstyles, make-up, and glam were on another level. But the talent was on another level. Thank God, and it’s because of you, guys.”

For new judge Thembi Seete, she said she had an exciting ride but it was also very challenging,

“Everything on the show was a surprise. To sum it up, this was the best time of my life. I have never been challenged like this ever in my career. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. Thank you, guys, for your support, and thank you for watching. Season 18 was the highlight of my life; 2022 I will never forget you.”

Another new judge, JR Bogopa who is also returning for season 19, said everything was perfect.

“This season has been a success from my point of view, in terms of the amount of talent that came through from audition phases and the number of crowds that came, 3 000 every episode in this venue without fail. People bought tickets without fail. It’s a well-oiled machine, well-run, tightly run and the production is unmatched.”

“IDOLS is a steppingstone of what is to become. is not the end or be all, this is where you start your career, the biggest catapult of your life. This is where it’s going to springboard from.”

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela broke the news on Twitter, saying it is a long overdue decision. He also pointed out how the numbers kept on declining over the years but said they performed well overall.

"Reaction: Long overdue. But, we have to honest about one thing. Viewers fatigue? Absolutely. Rating drop? Well it’s more nuanced. Yes the show dropped in numbers but so did DStv in general. The show still performed relatively well though not as great as years past.

"At some point in the latest seasons, yes the show haemorrhaged numbers but it would also bounce back in subsequent episodes. I think out of viewers excitement & prestige not being great, the other main motivation to bow out is likely profitability — sponsors & ad buys," he added.
