Defending champions Argentina edged past debutants Cabo Verde 3-2 after extra time to secure a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Argentina’s scare and Messi’s momentum
Argentina appeared set for control early on, but the match quickly turned into a test of nerve. Star forward Lionel Messi put the South Americans in front with his seventh goal of the tournament, a strike that further strengthens his bid for the Golden Boot.
Cabo Verde responded with determination, finding an equaliser in the 59th minute to turn the contest on its head. From there, they held their shape and managed to force the game into extra time, denying Argentina the chance to settle it in regular time.
Extra-time drama: Martinez, Cabral and the own goal
As the match shifted into extra time, Argentina struck almost immediately. Lisandro Martinez—who plays his club football for Manchester United—scored two minutes into the extra period to give his side a renewed advantage.
However, Cabo Verde refused to fold. Lopes Cabral, introduced from the bench, produced a stunning finish to level matters again in the 103rd minute, sending the game into the tense final stages with a penalty shootout looming.
Argentina then found the breakthrough during the second half of extra time when Cabo Verde conceded an unfortunate own goal, breaking the deadlock and ultimately deciding the tie.
Round of 16 confirmed and Cabo Verde’s World Cup story
Despite the loss, Cabo Verde’s first-ever World Cup campaign ended on a memorable note. Their performance against the 2022 World Cup winners showcased resilience and belief throughout the match.
Argentina, meanwhile, will now face Egypt in the Round of 16 as they continue their attempt to retain the FIFA World Cup title.
