Nigeria’s men’s basketball side, D’Tigers, have sent a clear message in the current FIBA African qualifiers, stringing together convincing wins to strengthen their bid for a spot at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Doha, Qatar.
Much of the early impact has been driven by brothers Ikenna and Uchenna Iroegbu, whose influence has been central to Nigeria’s opening stretches of the competition.
D’Tigers kicked off their qualifying run with a tense 84–81 triumph over Tunisia, a game in which both Ikenna and Uchenna Iroegbu turned in major scoring contributions, finishing with 17 points apiece.
Wes Iwundu added 14 points, while Uchenna posted a further 13-point performance, helping Nigeria showcase a strong offensive showing throughout the contest.
Carrying that momentum forward, the Nigerian team followed up on Friday, July 3, 2026, by narrowly overcoming Guinea 80–79, before going on to post a commanding 106–62 win against Rwanda on Sunday, July 5, 2026, completing a flawless three-game spell in the qualifying window.
The Iroegbu brothers, originally from Abia State—Uzuakoli and Umuawa Alaocha in Umuahia—have quickly established themselves as influential figures for Nigeria, blending technical ability with composure and on-court leadership.
As the qualifiers move ahead, D’Tigers’ strong start has placed them among the leading contenders for one of Africa’s available places at the 2027 World Cup, with growing attention on both the team’s performances and the increasing international profile of the Iroegbu brothers.
