With the start of the World Cup drawing close, England have released the squad numbers for the tournament, with familiar names retaining their roles in the numbering system.
England squad numbers: the key shirts
As they did at Euro 2024 two years earlier, Harry Kane is set to wear the No. 9 shirt and Jude Bellingham will take No. 10.
Several other numbers remain unchanged, including No. 1 Jordan Pickford, No. 4 Declan Rice and No. 7 Bukayo Saka.
Debutants and how numbers have been used recently
Among the nine players who are set to make their senior tournament debuts, two have been assigned squad numbers in the one-to-11 range: No. 3 Nico O’Reilly and No. 8 Elliot Anderson.
There is also a notable pattern from Euro 2024 under Gareth Southgate:
- In England’s opening match, a 1-0 victory over Serbia, 10 of the players given squad numbers between one and 11 were in the starting line-up.
- The only player among those numbers not to start was No. 3 Luke Shaw, who began the match on the bench.
- In the 2-1 loss to Spain in the final, that same total of 10 players with one-to-11 squad numbers started again.
- Kobbie Mainoo was the only player outside the first 11 to be in the starting XI for that game.
World Cup kit plans and match timeline
England will begin their World Cup campaign in an all-white home kit.
- On June 17, they face Croatia in Arlington, Texas.
- Six days later, on the second group game, they will wear the kit again against Ghana at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
- For the final group match in Group L, England will change to red shirts and blue shorts to play Panama on June 27 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
