Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to join the Miami Heat after agreeing to leave the Milwaukee Bucks, with multiple outlets in the United States reporting the move on Monday.
The Heat have reportedly come out on top in a high-stakes race that also included the Boston Celtics, landing the 31-year-old Greek forward. Antetokounmpo previously delivered a championship to Milwaukee, winning the title with the Bucks in 2021.
Reports from ESPN say Miami will acquire Antetokounmpo along with Bobby Portis. In return, the Bucks would receive Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis.
ESPN also indicated that Milwaukee will add significant draft compensation to the package, receiving three first-round picks, a pick swap, and a second-round pick as part of the agreement.
The reported trade effectively ends months of uncertainty surrounding Antetokounmpo’s long-term future in Milwaukee. The situation had become increasingly tense as speculation grew around whether the MVP-calibre star would remain with the team.
Part of that backdrop involved Antetokounmpo publicly expressing frustration with the Bucks’ leadership after he was not cleared to play following a left knee hyperextension. Despite the decision from Milwaukee’s front office, the two-time MVP maintained that he was ready to contribute.
Antetokounmpo insisted he was fit and prepared to help Milwaukee’s bid to reach the postseason, even though the organization had ruled him unavailable. His comments added fuel to the widening discussion about a potential disconnect between the player and the team’s decision-making.
In April, following Milwaukee’s failure to earn a playoff spot after finishing the season 32-50, Antetokounmpo again voiced criticism, this time targeting the team’s inability to put together a roster capable of contending for championships. He suggested that the franchise had not built a squad that matched the level of success required to compete for the title.
“I feel like sometimes people just don’t listen,” Antetokounmpo said. “They listen to the sources. The main source is me. It is what it is.”
