South African Grammy-winning vocalist Nomcebo Zikode looked back on one of the most emotional nights of her career after taking part in this year’s Africa Forward Le Concert in Nairobi, Kenya, where she shared the spotlight with some of the biggest names from across the continent.
Using social media to capture the experience, Zikode posted clips and photos from the event, including a standout scene during her performance of the global hit “Jerusalema.” In the middle of the musical moment, she ended up sharing the stage with French president Emmanuel Macron, turning the performance into a highly talked-about display of unity through music.
In footage she later shared online, Zikode sounded genuinely moved as she reflected on the reception she received from Macron and the atmosphere at the gathering.
“I am deeply honoured to have received the warmest welcome from president Emmanuel Macron. What a beautiful moment of unity, peace, and the power of music! May we continue building bridges between nations through culture and collaboration,” she captioned the post.
She also uploaded a set of event photos, highlighting what the night meant to her as African music took centre stage in front of an international audience.
“Celebrated African music with the president of France, Emmanuel Macron. Connecting nations through our universal language: music!” she wrote.
Speaking with Drum, the singer described the overall experience as unforgettable—starting from her appearance at the Africa Forward Summit and carrying through to her role in closing the Business Forum.
“It was an incredible honour and a truly magical experience. Performing at the Africa Forward Summit, closing the Business Forum, and sharing the stage with president Emmanuel Macron was surreal. The energy, the standing ovation, and that spontaneous dance moment created something very special,” she said.
Zikode went on to say that she has long felt welcomed by French audiences, and she values the chance to spotlight South African sounds on a wider international platform.
“I am always so warmly embraced by the French. It’s always a great cultural exchange and an opportunity to export our art out there. These kinds of performances put South Africa on the global stage and open even bigger doors for my music and for other South African artists. I’m deeply grateful and excited for what’s next,” she added.
Her “Jerusalema” moment quickly spread online, with fans praising her for representing South Africa proudly on major international stages.
Zikode’s performance was among the event’s most memorable highlights at Africa Forward Le Concert, a programme focused on African culture and music while also bringing together leaders and communities from across the continent and France.
