Gumede began by explaining that she wants to share a personal story: she is 34 years old, and she has been part of the acting industry since she was 23. She noted that one of the biggest parts of her career arrived when she was only 24.
After landing that major role at such a young age, she said viewers frequently assumed she was much older than she actually is—largely because of the adult, mature characters she was portraying on screen. In turn, she continued taking on older characters for much of her career.
But the actress said everything shifted when she chose to undergo gastric sleeve surgery, which she described as a decision that “completely” changed her life. She shared that the weight loss has been significant enough that she now gets to play characters who are either within her age bracket or closer to her real age.
Gumede also said the transformation has boosted her confidence and expanded what she can do physically as a performer. She added that she currently has one of the biggest roles of her career on the way—calling it the biggest role and saying it will be arriving very soon.
She emphasized that the new physical ability has made her a better actor, because she can now perform certain tasks she couldn’t do before. At the same time, she said she has gained confidence that she didn’t have earlier in her journey.
Before looking ahead, Gumede encouraged others to make choices that improve their lives, even if other people have opinions. She told viewers that if they want to change their lives, they should go ahead and do it—adding that they shouldn’t let people dictate what they should or shouldn’t do.
The actress is now preparing to star in the upcoming Netflix telenovela The Polygamist. She described the project as her biggest role to date, underscoring that her next chapter is both personal and professional.
