Alex Iwobi’s comeback for Fulham has provided a timely lift for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle as Nigeria prepares for international friendlies against Portugal and Poland next month.
Iwobi was named in Fulham’s starting lineup for their 1-1 Premier League draw on the road at Wolves on Sunday. The midfielder returned after recovering from a hamstring problem that had sidelined him for several weeks. Calvin Bassey also began the match for Fulham, while Samuel Chukwueze was introduced from the bench late in the game.
Why Iwobi’s return matters for Nigeria
With Iwobi back in action, Chelle gains a key option as he continues shaping his plans for the high-profile friendlies, which are expected to play a role in Nigeria’s overall build-up toward the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Over recent seasons, Iwobi has been among Nigeria’s most reliable performers, offering a mix of goals, assists, and on-field leadership from midfield. His regained availability is expected to strengthen the Super Eagles set-up, particularly as a number of Europe-based players look set to arrive after strong finishes to their club campaigns.
Nigeria are also expected to view the meetings with Portugal and Poland as an opportunity to experiment with tactical combinations and evaluate individual form, as Chelle looks ahead to more important competitive matches later in the year.
