Over the last 13 weeks, The Makhenes has held audiences’ attention with the debut run of its reality series. Marketed as a reflection of many South African households, the show has repeatedly sparked discussion by confronting issues viewers often shy away from—addiction, parenting, mental health, and the idea of healing.
Letoya Makhene’s personal journey at the center
Leading the series is actress, musician, and spiritual healer Letoya Makhene, who opens up about her life as she balances motherhood, life in the spotlight, and her own path toward recovery. Alongside her, audiences also meet her father, Blondie Makhene, her grandmother Ouma Lily, and her sisters Pauline and Gontse—whose separate narratives bring unresolved friction, individual challenges, and turning points for growth into focus.
In conversation, Letoya revisited the experience, the response the series has received, and what she hopes people take away from the season.
What viewers responded to most
Letoya says the reaction has far exceeded her expectations. She shared that the show has connected with many people, adding that she’s received a steady stream of messages from viewers who feel they—and their own families—are reflected in what’s unfolding on screen. For her, knowing the story resonated has been “really special,” especially because it suggests others are recognizing their own experiences in the family’s journey.
She also singled out the emotional realism of the moments that were hardest to watch, emphasizing that the scenes were not staged for effect. One of the most difficult sequences, she noted, was a therapy setting involving her children—something she described as an intense, fully present experience for everyone involved, with nothing hidden or exaggerated for viewers.
Handling attention, boundaries, and difficult truths
Asked how she feels about people conducting interviews about her, Letoya acknowledged that chatter—whether positive or negative—comes with the territory. She said she has come to terms with it, framing it as part of living in public.
When looking back, she offered guidance to a younger version of herself, urging her to soften her heart “even if it’s just a little.” Her message was that not everyone has the same heart, so she shouldn’t give the world all of it. Letoya also encouraged self-love, comfort with personal boundaries, and allowing consequences when loved ones cross them. If they leave, she said that’s acceptable; if they stay, then they must understand they need to do better. Above all, she stressed that she believes in not sacrificing herself for love—advising herself to love herself and to love God, which she says is where wholeness is found.
Family closeness, lessons learned, and what she hopes continues
Letoya believes her immediate family has grown closer since filming. She explained that the process created a space for uncomfortable conversations, forcing a real decision about whether they wanted to choose one another—or walk away. She said the outcome was that their love proved stronger. For the rest of her family, she believes they were always themselves; the difference now is that the public gets to see who they are.
She also pointed to the biggest surprise since the show aired: the sheer number of people who said they related to the story. According to her, viewers reached out to share that they recognized their own families, their own struggles, and their own challenges in the journey being shown. She described those responses as both humbling and healing.
As the first season edges toward its end, Letoya said she hopes audiences walk away with the understanding that healing is possible even when it feels uncomfortable. She added that families may not be perfect, but honest conversations can be the starting point for real change.
She noted she was nervous about sharing certain moments on camera, but she decided that if she was going to take part, she needed to be completely truthful. In her view, there was no purpose in participating if she would hide behind an edited version of herself that doesn’t feel real.
On how the experience changed her, Letoya said it reinforced the importance of choosing herself. She said she learned that healing depends on honesty, boundaries, and grace—and that she’s leaving this chapter feeling stronger than when it began.
And when it comes to what she’s most proud of as the season concludes, Letoya emphasized authenticity. She said she didn’t present herself as someone with all the answers or try to appear flawless. Instead, she shared her truth, believing it was worthwhile if even one person felt less alone.
