Newlyweds Melissa Nayimuli and Mandla N have plenty to celebrate again—this time, it’s for a major screen collaboration that puts them firmly on Netflix’s global map.
The couple revealed that they teamed up on Umthetho, Netflix’s upcoming South African crime drama. The series is scheduled to arrive worldwide on 14 August, with the project already drawing attention for its local talent and high-profile cast.
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, the pair posted the first trailer for the eagerly awaited show, offering fans an early look at what promises to be a tense new addition to Netflix’s lineup from South Africa.
Melissa shared the news with an emotional message, calling the production a huge career breakthrough. In her post, she wrote that “the cat is finally out of the bag,” adding that Umthetho is finally here. She also expressed pride in what the team accomplished, thanking the people involved and highlighting the effort behind bringing the series to life.
She continued by sending heartfelt appreciation to Netflix for trusting them with the project, while also praising the cast and crew for the privilege of creating something meaningful together. She concluded her message with a clear personal milestone: she framed the show as her first global series.
Mandla N, who is known as an acclaimed producer and director, quickly joined in with his own celebration. Commenting under the announcement, he simply said, “We did it my love.”
He also shared the trailer to his own Instagram page, reflecting on the demanding nature of the production process. In his caption, he described the behind-the-scenes grind—long days, sleepless nights—and joked that there was enough coffee to keep a small country awake, before expressing hope that viewers enjoy the final product as much as the team enjoyed making it.
Mandla then used the post to thank the cast and crew for their commitment throughout filming, noting that projects like this don’t happen by luck—they happen because of people who give their all. He followed that gratitude by acknowledging his production company, Black Brain Pictures, as well as Netflix South Africa, for believing in the project.
Ending with an impassioned message about the local industry, Mandla encouraged South Africans to keep supporting homegrown film and television. He emphasized that local stories matter and argued that if audiences back their own narratives, the rest of the world will eventually take notice too—declaring that together, South African storytelling can reach a global audience.
For Melissa and Mandla, the Umthetho announcement adds another major chapter to a whirlwind season. They recently tied the knot after months of celebrating their relationship through traditional ceremonies and their wedding.
On the professional front, the project also carries major weight for Melissa as her first global television production. For Mandla N, it further expands his growing body of work through Black Brain Pictures, the production company behind several of South Africa’s most successful television dramas.
With Umthetho set to premiere on 14 August, audiences won’t have long to wait to see the newlyweds’ first major on-screen collaboration—one they hope will spotlight the strength of South African storytelling on a world stage.
