Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a reported crash in which his car allegedly struck motorway barriers.
The former England winger, who most recently played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, is said to have driven a Lamborghini into the barriers on the M3 in Hampshire on Thursday morning.
The 31-year-old has since been released on bail while further investigations are carried out.
In a statement, Hampshire Police said: “Just before 9am on Thursday, officers received reports that a Lamborghini had collided with barriers on the M3 southbound, near the Minley Interchange.”
“No other vehicles were involved and there were no reports of any injuries.”
“The driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug, and failing to provide a specimen. He has been released on bail while our enquiries continue.”
A person close to Sterling confirmed the arrest, adding that there was “no proof” of drugs in his system.
The source further claimed the player has been through “an extremely tough couple of years” and said he had been made to “feel worthless” and “forgotten about”.
Sterling signed for Feyenoord in February on a contract running until the end of the season after leaving Chelsea in January, but he made only eight appearances for the Dutch club.
