Sol Phenduka has stoked new speculation about what’s next for Kaya 959’s Breakfast Show, suggesting that DJ Fresh could be in line to replace Sizwe Dhlomo on a permanent basis.

Key takeaways

  • Sol Phenduka says DJ Fresh may be considered as Kaya 959’s next permanent Breakfast Show host.
  • He claims Kaya 959 management moved to end Sizwe Dhlomo’s role immediately after the on-air announcement.
  • Sizwe Dhlomo had hosted the show for six years before his exit was confirmed.
  • Thomas Msengana was named interim presenter, with a new Breakfast Show team promised for June.
  • Neither Kaya 959 nor DJ Fresh has commented publicly on the latest claims.

What Sol Phenduka says happened after Sizwe Dhlomo left

Phenduka, who is both a podcaster and radio presenter, shared his claims during a recent episode of Podcast and Chill with MacG. In that conversation, he described what he said were behind-the-scenes developments connected to Sizwe’s departure from the station.

Sizwe initially told listeners he would stay on air until his contract ended, pointing to July 2026 as the end date. However, Kaya 959 later confirmed that his departure was put into effect right away, surprising audiences who expected him to continue through the period he referenced.

Sol said that people within Kaya 959 informed him management opted to accelerate the broadcaster’s exit shortly after Sizwe made the announcement on-air. He explained that while contracts at the station run through June, Sizwe had suggested he would still complete his term and remain on the show, but that plans reportedly changed to an immediate timeline.

“Today he announced, but obviously the contracts at Kaya end in June, and he was supposed to continue doing the show,” Sol said, describing what he was told by insiders. He added that he heard the manager’s decision was “immediate effect now,” implying the Breakfast Show would not continue with Sizwe the following day.

Sol also reflected on the contrast between what Sizwe said during the broadcast—namely that he believed he would see his contract through—and how the situation reportedly became immediate after the announcement. He said he did not understand the timing or the reason behind the shift.

Interim host named, permanent team promised—and Sol expects DJ Fresh

After Sizwe’s exit, Kaya 959 appointed Thomas Msengana as interim host for the Breakfast Show while the station searches for a long-term replacement. Kaya 959 has since confirmed that it will announce a new Breakfast Show team in June.

Despite that, Sol suggested that Msengana’s role may be temporary, alleging that DJ Fresh is among the names being considered. Sol also claimed that former Kaya 959 managing director Greg Maloka could potentially return to the station as part of the shake-up.

“The birdies spoke more,” Sol said in the discussion, adding that the information he received indicated that “Fresh” would be taking over to run the show. He further claimed that the same insiders suggested Greg might also be making a comeback.

Listener reaction as speculation grows

Sol’s comments have sparked lively debate among radio fans, with many listeners questioning whether Kaya 959 is preparing a major overhaul of its morning lineup.

At the time of writing, Kaya 959 and DJ Fresh have not publicly addressed the speculation.
