Adaobi Tabugbo wasted no time making an impact at the continental level, stepping onto the track in Accra and turning in a run that earned her a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Senior African Athletics Championships. The result marks a major milestone for one of Nigeria’s most promising young hurdlers and underlines her growing presence among Africa’s leading athletes.
Tabugbo produced a strong performance to finish on the podium alongside fellow Nigerian and world record holder Tobi Amusan, who took gold and delivered Nigeria its first championship title of the meet. For the 23-year-old, the bronze is her first individual senior international medal for Nigeria, a landmark that reflects how quickly she has climbed into the conversation with the continent’s best in the event.
Having already shown her upward trajectory over the last two seasons, Tabugbo has been in excellent form, including breaking through the sub-13-second mark and adding major collegiate successes in the United States. Her showing in Accra stands as the latest major step forward in a career that continues to build momentum race by race.
Before the race, Tabugbo had set out her mindset clearly, outlining what she hoped to achieve in Ghana.
“The goal is to execute here and hopefully run my personal record, or close to my personal best at least,” she told journalists. “The goal is to keep building.”
With the medal secured, her focus is already shifting toward bigger ambitions. She signalled that her next targets extend beyond the championships she has just competed in, with the next cycle set to bring new challenges.
“Looking ahead, I want to compete at the Commonwealth Games and African Championships next year — and just keep going up from there,” she said.
Tabugbo’s bronze in Accra is expected to be a meaningful confidence boost as she ramps up preparations for upcoming international action, with the Commonwealth Games currently the key objective on her pathway forward.
