South African actor, producer, and director Thomas Gumede has melted hearts online after posting a heartfelt tribute to his son, just days after the young player wrapped up a memorable soccer tournament weekend.
The proud dad shared the celebration on social media, spotlighting his son and the squad from Tshiama Academy after they came out on top in a competition held during one of the coldest weekends of the year. Posting a series of photos from the event, Gumede leaned into the emotion of the moment, reflecting on how much his child has grown—both as a player and as a person.
Gumede made it clear that while he’s thrilled by his son’s improving skills, what stands out most to him is the kind of character the sport is shaping. “This past weekend with the champ and his Tshiama Academy family! They won the tournament on the coldest weekend and did it having fun!” he wrote in the caption.
He then expanded on what he’s noticed in his son’s approach to the game, praising the resilience, sportsmanship, and team spirit the youngster brought to the field. In his post, Gumede explained that the growth isn’t only about performance—it’s about attitude. “His game is improving, but more importantly his character. When he gets hurt he gets up again and keeps going. He fights for the ball like I bought it for him for Christmas,” he joked.
The filmmaker also highlighted moments that spoke to his son’s respect for others. Gumede revealed that the youngster apologizes when he fouls opposing players and celebrates his teammates’ successes with genuine excitement, as if they were his own. “He apologizes if he fouls another player and he celebrates his teammates’ goals like he scored!” he added.
Among the standout highlights from the tournament was one extraordinary play: his son’s long-range strike, which reportedly sent family members and supporters into a frenzy. “He scored an amazing long ranger, and we all celebrated like we won the World Cup!” Gumede said, capturing the energy of the day.
Gumede closed the post with an emotional reflection on fatherhood, writing that being this boy’s dad is the best thing that’s ever happened to him. “Being this guy’s father is the best thing to ever happen to me. Asbonge Umdali,” he concluded.
