It’s that time of the year again when music fans get to vote for their favourite artists in the MTN SAMA 19 Record of the Year category. With the SAMAs less than two weeks away, music trio, Mi Casa, are hoping their fans will help their track, Heavenly Sent, take home the coveted golden statue.
Last year the group – made up of producer Dr. Duda, trumpeter Mo-T and J’Something – walked away with three awards including Group of the Year and Best Dance Album for their debut album, Mi Casa Music.
Frontman, J’Something chatted to ZAlebs reporter Tamlyn Canham in the run-up to the event at Sun City on May 11.
“For us it’s such an incredible feeling. We didn’t expect it at all and its one of those things that came as a surprise and to be nominated again it makes us really proud,” he says.
Record of the Year is a hotly contested category, with 20 nominees vying for the Record of the Year title. It’s the only category where the winner is decided by the public. The public are given a list of the nominees comprising of artists, duos or groups that dominated the airwaves in 2012. The list is chosen based on the number of times a track was played across South African radio stations. The category always causes a bit of drama with music lovers who debate about who should’ve and should not have been included. J’Something says they’re hoping to make history by winning the category two years in a row.
“What’s interesting about this category, it’s obviously the most prestigious award that you can win at the SAMAs but it means so much more to us and I think to our fans as well. The song, Heavenly Sent, I think is everyone’s favourite. Even though These Streets won record of the year last year, we now have this opportunity to make history in the sense that no artist has ever won this award twice, never mind twice in a row. So really we just encouraging all our fans. We’ve always said that we have the best fans in the world. So let’s bring this one home,” he says.
Good luck guys.
