With records already broken, Marvel’s Iron Man III smashed in at No.1 at the South African Box Office this past weekend and has become the biggest 5-day opening weekend in history. Find out what ZAlebs report, Zibuyile Dladla, thinks of this action film.
Iron Man III finds Tony Stark battling with his own inner demons rather than the new villain in the movie. In certain scenes you can expect the Iron Man himself at his most vulnerable state, from experiencing anxiety attacks to his loss of confidence as a super hero mechanic who cannot control his own Iron Man suits.
Like any movie sequel you crave more, more action, more power and even more suits and that’s exactly what Iron Man III offers. Stark created multiple suits but ironically enough only one suit was mainly worn by many of the characters. For example when Stark’s house is under attack by Anti-American soldiers who are under the orders of the main villain known as ‘The Mandarin’ in this scene we see the iron suit automatically clinching itself onto Pepper Pots while both Pots and Stark are flung across the room like an elastic ball.
Director Shane Black could be applauded for his strategic comedic placing of Sir Ben Kingsley who plays the role of The Mandarin. For a good 30 minutes we’re convinced that Kingsley is the main villain causing havoc around the world only to find out that The Mandarin is nothing but a gimmick actor hired to act as a blood thirsty villain. Kingsley is the absolute highlight of the entire movie; it was interesting to see him play a complete moron, a far cry from his serious roles that we’re used to.
The real villains are a bunch of soldier rejects that either became dis-abled during war in Iraq or have come to claim their own revenge on the American government. These soldiers are injected with a substance called the extremis which causes them to heat up when engaging in battle, making them twice as powerful as the original U.S army.
In his quest to save America and his damsel in distress Pepper, Tony Stark finds it terribly difficult to stay in his suit as it either falls apart or malfunctions at a crucial moment during his rescue missions, this proves to us how much of a true super-hero he is even without a weaponry suit.
As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
It was also refreshing to see Don Cheadle playing an even firmer role in this sequel, rather than the typical hero side-kick, even though he had to share his iron suit with a couple of characters in the movie.
Iron Man III undoubtedly feels like a comedy wrapped in a super-hero plot with a couple of explosions here and there. There are a lot of moments where you’ll find yourself laughing, actually most parts of the movie have some cunning comical lines that will have you giggling.
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley. Marvel’s Iron Man III is currently open country-wide and is available in 3D in select cinemas.
