Pearl Thusi has had a number of firsts. But one in particular that she seems to be prideful of to date is that she was the lead of a Netflix African original series. This was back in February 2020 when Netflix introduced the crime-espionage action series Queen Sono with Thusi playing the lead.
The first season had a total of six-episodes which ended on the ultimate cliffhanger which saw Thusi as Queen Sono swear revenge on those that killed her mother figure in the season. The cliffhanger was so endearing that it did not take long for demands for the second season to come up. More especially considering the significance of the series as the first African Netflix original series.
As such, by April 2020, it was confirmed that there would be a second season of the show. However, just as the promise was made, COVID-19 and strict lockdown restrictions and travel restrictions meant that there would be a delay in the production of the series.
However, as the world started adjusting to the new normal and production houses started to confirm cancelled and renewed shows subsequently. Queen Sono without reason considering that the script for season two was already approved was cancelled.
Pearl Thusi endorses petition to revive Queen Sono
Almost three years later and the demand for Netflix to reconsider their decision to cancel Queen Sono is still a matter which some cannot believe. As such, one Instagram user took to their account to share that they have started a petition to have the series revived.
Pearl then shared the link to the petition and asserted that she is touched that the series is still impactful and has an audience continually fighting for its revival. As such, the petition is calling for 500 signatures and has already earned over 337 signatures since going up.
The description for the petition explains that:
“Queen Sono is a NetflixSA original that changed a lot of lives forever. A series that gave us a beautiful perspective on what it is like living on the diverse continent of Africa. A series that gave strength & a voice creatively to African men and women alike... So why is it that Queen Sono has not got the green light on another season when it had so much support before the pandemic?
This well thought out, colorful, action packed & heart grabbing series deserves another shot !”
However, as Pearl indicated while sharing the post, as much as she is up for another season of Queen Sono, she has in the past asserted that she has made peace with the fact that it might never happen. Reported at the time as:
It's been two years since Netflix's first African original series Queen Sono was canned, but the show continues to receive reviews from scores of people across the world.
The series' lead actress Pearl Thusi, has taken to social media to open up about its cancelation. This follows after viewers continue to give the series a thumbs up after watching binge-watching it.
While Pearl has accepted that her show will never be renewed, she is grateful that people enjoy it so much. “It’s wild that I’ve never seen all this amazing feedback on Queen Sono from all over the world… I’ve made peace with it not being renewed but reading this also made me quite sad. But I’m so happy we entertained so many people worldwide,” Pearl Thusi tweeted.
