The morning of the 23rd October, 2006 will down down in history as one of the saddest days to ever happen in the music industry and to Mzansi as a whole. South Africa lost its gem and sweetheart, singer and actress Lebo Mathosa in a tragic car trash, after her driver lost control of her vehicle, which they were traveling on the N3 Highway on the East Rand.Penny Lebyane has taken to social media with a video to reminisce of the fondest and beautiful moments and memories she shared with the late superstar, Lebo Mathosa. Lebyane decorates Mathosa as the bravest person she has ever encountered in her life. She admits findings it difficult to let go of Mathosa even after years of her passing.
"We got into this game as girls, with girls like Lebo Mathosa in music and I, me doing my radio thing. And our worlds collided literally. I don;'t want to release her, it's been so many years that she's been gone and that is very clear. But it is still heart sore, it is still a stolen moment" said Penny Lebyane
Sixteen years later, yet Penny Lebyane still recollects the tragic morning of Lebo Mathosa as if it was yesterday. She describes how she couldn't attend the SAMA because she just had a small baby at the time. However, some fondest and beautiful memories she shared with Mathosa outside of their work still remains one for the books.
"You know I have a clear recollection of what that morning felt like, it was one of the saddest mornings. You know, I was breastfeeding my son, who was year or even less. You know I missed that SAMA Awards, nominees party but you know I had so many encounters with Lebo, you know shopping, preparing for the SAMAs, you know finding ourselves at parties, you know wearing a certain popular items at that time" said Penny Lebyane
The friendship both Penny Lebyane and Lebo Mathosa had was one for the books and that is what she misses the most of Mathosa. Lebyane shares the memories of their girl era, where they were the coolest clique in town. From matching outfits, driving similar cars, and hanging out with the same people, those are moments and memories that Lebyane finds so difficult to let go.
"There was once upon a time, this famous jumpsuit that all of us had and we all had it, in maroon and a couple of girls who knew whats up had it. Of course was brave to rock it in her own way, you know we all had our different interpretation of how we rocked it. She drove her RAV, I drove my green RAV and those RAVs were known. you know people like Oskido say things like 'once upon a time in this town there were girls running this town, Branda Fassie, Lebo Mathosa, the only one that's left is Penny Lebyane. You know it's things like that." said Penny Lebyane
Lebo Mathosa may be gone but she will forever be missed.
