Nutty is a high-octane radio host, music pro, and record label owner who started in campus radio and later moved to commercial youth radio, ultimately very successfully heading up the music department.
He started creating tunes at the age of just 17 and has since released 3 albums, 2 compilations and over 50 singles. His career highlights include winning the remixer of the year award at the 16th South African Music Awards, having one of his songs, “Umdali”, remixed by the iconic UK producer / DJ, Charles Webster, doing a remix for one of his favourite UK labels, Freerange Records, and interviewing the likes of the late Mam Sibongile Khumalo, Jazzanova, Dj Spinna, Nkemdi Amadiume, Zoe Modiga, Erykah Badu and DJs At Work.
“I am super excited to join 5FM,” Nutty says, “The station is a key player in South African urban culture and lifestyle and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”
In terms of what listeners can expect from his show, he says, “As one can expect from 5’s vibe, the show will be breaking fresh new music and artists, profiling labels and DJs, and chatting with iconic figures in the music space. It’ll also be connecting with niche music collectives, movements and societies around the country, because they are at the forefront of the edgy music lifestyle.”
Michael Bossenger, 5FM’s Programme Manager, stated that “Nutty brings a massive music punch and tons of personality to the station. As a station, we’re all about bringing the biggest, freshest hits and the coolest new artists first and he’s a perfect fit for that. We look forward to having his contagious energy on the airwaves and this show becoming a huge weekend highlight.”
The station recently bid a fond farewell to Allan Nicoll, after more than 6 years on the air. The radio host hung up his headphones after his show on Sunday 11 December to focus on his own music label.
“In the six years I’ve been hosting Selective Styles, we’ve provided a spotlight on the South African underground music scene and discovered unheard gems from our global community,” said Nicoll.
“Selective Styles was home to the freshest, cutting-edge beats from the likes of the Mzansi massive – FKA Mash, Sio, Gabbana, China Charmeleon, Jackson Brainwave, LaTique, Sculptured Music, Nutty Nys, Vinny Da Vinci, Zito Mowa, Card On Spokes, EMAMKAY and many, many more. It also played host to the best international interviews and tracks from icons like Atjazz, Jimpster, Jazzanova, Children Of Zeus, Matthew Herbert, Emmavie, and Rocco. I could
not be more proud of the guests, track lists, the vibe, and listeners’ reception every Sunday – it seriously made my soul sing. I’d like to thank 5FM for their vision, all the artists who made a contribution, and the listeners without whom Selective Styles would not have been a success”, he concluded.
