Bafana Bafana might have had tough times in the history of football. This international team tried to qualify for three world cup finals, not once but thrice. However, all these times, they failed. Nevertheless, as much as they did not qualify for the World Cup finals, the team has produced several great players in the history of South African football.

From Aaron Mokoena, John Moshoeu to Steven Pienaar. Here is a list of players who represented their teams well. Based on popularity, longevity, presidential honors, and talent, here are three football players that South Africans will forever remember. Some have retired and no longer associate themselves as much in football, while some have become coaches to nurture new talent.

Aaron Mokoena

Aaron Mokoena is the only South African football player representing the national side close to one hundred times.

At two world cups, he represented Bafana. Including the one in 2010 on home soil and also at four world cups.

Neil Tovey

You know Neil Tovey had to be on the list! The truth is, he might not be a successful player compared to the others but, he has earned this spot as one of the first-ever captains in South Africa. He once lost his captaincy but got it back in 1996 and led players of the Bafana Bafana to the African championship.

Neil is considered the best because he captained the team more than 25 times and won 52 caps for the national side.

Lucas Radebe

Lucas Radebe is special. Do you know why? The late South African President, Nelson Mandela, once referred to Lucas as his ‘hero.’ To have the president call you his hero is everything. What else would you need? So, during his time at Leeds United, Nelson Mandela bestowed this honor to Lucas.

In 1996, Lucas was among the Nation Builders who won the African crown. In the 1998 and 2002 World Cup, he represented Bafana Bafana.

He is one of the most established defenders. He left Kaizer Chiefs in 1994 and became a legend in Yorkshire.

Benni McCarthy

When you hear Benni McCarthy's name, think about the only player from South African who has ever won the European Champions League. That fact alone surely qualifies him on this list.

In the history of Bafana, he is the highest scorer. He demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess when he moved to England with Blackburn Rovers.
