Being on Idols can be a great launching point. But more often than not, the winners and contestants fade into obscurity. Being on the show is one thing, but having a solid career after show is not as easy, and only a handful of contestants have managed to successfully do this.

Take a look at the five stars who've managed to solidify themselves beyond the show.

In 2015, Amanda Black entered the 11th season of Idols SA which was won by Karabo Mogane. Although she didn't get the title, she is one of the most successful stars from the music competition, and some might even argue that her career is bigger than the winner's. The songstress took the entertainment industry by storm when she released her debut album, Amazulu.

Shekhinah

The singer did not just enter the competition once but twice, and like Amanda, she did not win. However, she has managed to create a name for herself in the South African entertainment scene. The Suited hitmaker released her debut album, Rosegoldlast year and it has been doing well on the charts.

Musa Sukwena

In 2013, Musa won the 9th season of Idols and although it was shaky in the beginning, the singer teamed up with the late Robbie Malinga and his career took a new life, making him one of the most successful artists in South Africa.

Khaya Mthethwa

From the beginning, Khaya Mthethwa was a fan favourite on the 8th season of the show.  To no one's surprise, he won. Over the years, the media personality has transitioned from being a pop star, to becoming a pastor and a gospel musician with legions of fans across the country.

Mmatema

Like Khaya, Mmatema was a fan favourite from the beginning, and she even went as far as being in the top two. Many were shocked when she lost, but that did not stop her from pursuing a career in the entertainment industry, from acting to singing and presenting, the starlet is exploring all mediums.
