Our women soccer team Banyana Banyana’s festivities are far from coming to an end. As the University of South Africa (UNISA) has decided to start a bursary programme for all the twenty-three ladies to further their tertiary studies.

After a number of social media backlash, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture of South Africa Nathi Mthethwa endured a wrath of South Africans following Banyana Banyana WAFCON victory. Left with no other choice, Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced that Banyana Banyana will be paid adequately following the country’s outcry of the ladies being underpaid.

As if those were not enough amazing news, the University of South Africa (UNISA) has come forth to pledge a bursary scheme to offer all twenty-three ladies opportunities to study further. Taking to social social, UNISA has announced that all twenty-three Banyana Banyana ladies will enroll at the university to study their chosen fields are not charge as of January, 2023.

Outside of playing for the women’s national team, moth of the ladies are living very ordinary lives as compared to their male counterparts who solely relies on the football paychecks to sustain their lavish lifestyles. This bursary fund will offer ladies an opportunity of a lifetime to them to further their tertiary studies at no extra charge at all.

“The University of South Africa (UNISA) has decided to grant the WAFCON Champions Banyana Banyana bursary opportunities to pursue study programmes of their choice and continue to shape their futures to a better tomorrow” wrote the University of South Africa

Media personalities like Bonang Matheba and Pearl Thusi has had harsh words for Minister Nathi Mthethwa where Banyana Banyana is concerned. Even the President of South Africa met up with the ladies during one of their trophy festivities, where he announced that the Banyana Banyana ladies will be paid fairly to their male counterparts.

President Cyril Ramaphosa gravely expressed that he was ashamed to hear that Banyana Banyana ladies are paid ten times less than their male counterparts, Bafana Bafana. President Ramaphosa challenged that narrative and promised that it will change going forward.

“In recognition of their herstoric achievement, UNISA will make available a special bursary (study opportunities) for the twenty-three players in accordance with their university admission policies. The offer, whose terms and conditions will be communicated to the potential recipients, is effective from January 2023” wrote the University of South Africa

Many tweeps are certainly not jumping for joy for the news, as they feel as though, this UNISA bursary grants offered to Banyana Banyana is a slap across the face to many South African students who wishes to go to university but cannot because of certain obstacles, especially at UNISA.

“SA is a failed state because of people defending nonsense. They win Africa Cup then all of a sudden UNISA has bursaries available? You’re reactive like your leaders, bheki cele and panyaza lesufi, you dont anticipate a problem before it happens. Rules will be set aside here” wrote The Ruined Man

“So they are offered bursaries whether they meet qualifying criteria or not and didn’t apply. Meanwhile there’s students from poor backgrounds who are denied funding year in year out. This tough ladies are working and just got bonuses and now this?” wrote The Ruined Man
