It has been two years since the premiere of South Africa’s second official Netflix original action drama series Kings of Joburgfirst landed on the streaming platform back in December 2020. While season two was confirmed shortly after the availability of the first season.
The road to season two of the action drama series has been filled with unexpected surprises and tragedies. The biggest of those was the news of the passing of lead and executive producer Shona Ferguson. A death which left many wondering who would replace him.
In true Netflix fashion, as the official countdown to Friday, 27 January 2023 has begun. This set to mark the first rollout of the major Netflix series and film productions of 2023, the paid subscription video on demand platform has released the trailers for its notable first releases.
One of them being the official trailer for Kings of Joburg. Not only was the trailer released but a brief summary of the second season was shared to which read:

As such it seems that the series will follow the natural succession progression as Zolisa Xaluva as Mogomotsi “Mo” Masire will take over the role of the lead as Shona Ferguson’s Simon “Vader” Masire is revealed to have passed as teased with the funeral procession.
The matter of Connie Ferguson in season two coming to life after playing the mermaid in season one of the series is still unclear. However, fans cannot wait to see the star play this role.
More so as The Queen is set to end on Friday, 13 January 2023. Ahead of the end of the Mzansi Magic telenovela, Ferguson shared the final teaser for the telenovela. It showed that the series finale will be filled with drama, action and is set to answer the big question of who will survive ‘til the end.
This comes off the back of the great white-washing of most of the main and supporting main cast of the telenovela this past couple of weeks. As such, it seems that the last remaining main cast members including Ferguson and Themba Ndaba as Brutus will be the remaining living characters at the end of it all. That of course with returning fan-favourite Loyiso McDonald as Kagiso.
Even before the official end of its television run, Connie Ferguson had already bid farewell to the telenovela as they ended production on the telenovela back in 2022. At the time, Ferguson shared a touching message on Instagram with memories and signatures from past and present cast members of the show.
