South African rapper, songwriter, entrepreneur and record producer Cassper Nyovest, one of the most successful artists in the entertainment industry today was born on December 16, 1990.

Born and raised in Mahikeng, North West, his parents named him Refiloe Maele Phoolo. Cassper Nyovest studied at the Sol Plaatjie Secondary School, where he participated in athletics amongst other sporting activities. Cassper Nyovest started rapping in 2002 at the tender age of 12. 

At the age of 13, Cassper formed a hip-hop group, Childhood Gangsta, with his friends. After he left this group, he joined another eight-member group called Slow Motion which included record producer Aashish Gangaram of Ganja Beatz. 

In 2006, he failed his Grade 10 exams and decided to drop out of high school in 2007 at the age of 16 to pursue music full time. After dropping out of school, Cassper Nyovest signed with Motswako record label Impact Sounds. But in 2008, the relationship between Nyovest and Impact Sounds soured because of creative differences. This was when Cassper Nyovest became an independent artist. During this period, Nyovest moved back home and created his own record label, Family Tree Records.
