Career

Mafikizolo is a South African Afro-pop music duo comprised of composer Theo Kgosinkwe and lead vocalist Nhlanhla Nciza, formed in 1996. Mafikizolo was founded and formed in Kagiso in the West Rand, located in Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza established the group and the late Tebogo “Tebza” Madingoane was drafted by music master Oskido to join the group and bring it in line with the trend of the moment. Prior to the days of Mafikizolo, Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza met at a local talent contest. The group began as a girl band, but none lasted, so Nciza persuaded Theo to join the group. They sent their demo to Oskido of Kalawa Records (now Kalawa Jazmee Records) and Kalawa Records signed them in 1996.

The pair rose to prominence with the release of their singles "Ndihamba Nawe kuphela," "Kwela Kwela," "Sibongile," and "Udakwa Njalo." Mafikizolo, the group's self-titled debut album, was released in 1997, followed by Music Revolution in 1999. The band's third album, Gate Crashers, was released in 2000 and became their best-selling album. They are multiple times winners of the South African Music Award, including Best Pair or Group of the Year awards. And they have been nominated for international awards such as the BET Awards, All African Music Awards, and Black Canadian Awards. In addition, Mafikizolo has won 14 South African Music Awards, two MTV Africa Music Awards, including the awards for Best Duo or Group of the Year.

Mafikizolo’s Music Influence

Kwaito also influenced their music, and they are credited with coining the term "Kwela" after their musical style. It's been dubbed "kwaito-cum-marabi house music." Their music addresses societal themes such as women's and children's abuse, poverty, the value of education, and the consequences of casual sex.

Following a near-fatal car accident that sent Nhlanhla Nciza to the hospital, they released their highly praised album Sibongile in 2002, which included the smash track Ndihamba Nawe, which is still relevant years later.
